What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism is a severe pervasive developmental disorder marked by the presence of abnormal or impaired development in social interaction and communication and a markedly restricted repertoire of activity and interests.   Presently, estimates report the prevalence rate of autism as 1 in 150, although differences in methodology may result in higher or lower ranges.   The disorder is unique in that the nature of the impairment may change over time and varies, depending on the development of the individual.   The etiology remains unknown, but it is highly likely that autism is heterogeneous (meaning that it is a disorder resulting from many different factors).   Current research accepts the biological basis of the disorder and the search for the causes has focused on genetic and pre- and peri- natal environmental factors.

Investigating Autism and Related Disorders

The Family Studies Research Center at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine conducts genetic, as well implicit learning research, in order to elucidate the factors that may be associated with autism.   We use molecular biology, quantitative genetics, multi-dimensional family studies assessments, interactive and observational measures, and laboratory response tasks in an effort to study the disorder from all perspectives.

Studies to Advance Autism Research and Treatment (STAART)

The Greater New York Autism Research Center of Excellence (GNY-ARCE)

The aim of this study is to seek families of individuals affected with an autism spectrum disorder, over the age of 18 months. In addition, we are seeking healthy control subjects. Participation involves a diagnostic evaluation, intelligence testing, interviews, stress and medical interviews, and a small sample of blood from all willing members of the family.

GCO# 01-1295

IRB Approved 05/01/07 - 4/30/08

Principal Investigator: Eric Hollander, MD

Sponsor: NIMH

A Family/Genetic Study of Autism and Related Disorders

The aim of this study is to identify a location on a chromosome that is close to an autism-related gene. We are seeking families with one or more individuals, over the age of 18 months, affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder including autism, PDD-NOS, and Asperger's syndrome. Participation involves interviews, an observation, cognitive tests, neurobiological assessments and a small sample of blood from all willing members of the family.

GCO# 98-436

IRB Approved 06/25/07 - 5/31/08

Principal Investigator: Jeremy Silverman, Ph.D.

Sponsor: Seaver Foundation

A pilot Cross-Cultural Study of Autism Phenotypes in Puerto Rico

The purpose of this study is to better understand observable characteristics of autism by examining the patterns of genetics that exists in Puerto Rican individuals. We are seeking families with one or more individuals affected with autism or Asperger's syndrome, over the age of 18 months. Participants must be primarily of Puerto Rican ancestry. Participation involves interviews and a small sample of blood from all willing members of the family.

GCO# 01-0995(2)

IRB Approved 04/19/07 - 4/18/08

Principal Investigator: Jeremy Silverman, Ph.D.

Sponsor: MSSM
